imilar to the definition of marriage under federal law, Merriam-Webster states marriage as “the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law.” Every state in the nation recognizes marriage on similar terms except for Connecticut and Massachusetts.

But the dictionary runs askew from legal recognition of marriage by the federal government and almost all the states by tacking on a secondary definition that counts unions between same-sex couples as “marriage.”

Merriam-Webster added the secondary meaning for marriage in 2003, even before gay marriage was legalized anywhere in the country. Whereas the company’s dictionary editions prior to 2003 stated no mention of same-sex marriage, the latest version now defines marriage also as “the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage.”

The change went unnoticed until WorldNetDaily recently reported on a YouTube video calling attention to the marriage “redefinition.”

The video prompted heated responses including one from a forum participant who charged gay rights activists with trying to control the definition of marriage in an effort to push their agenda.

“The word ‘marriage’ has never been synonymous with same sex relationships,” said the forum participant, according to WorldNetDaily. “What is happening is the meaning is being changed to trigger it becoming synonymous, not the other way round.”

Kory Stamper, an associate editor at Merriam-Webster, denied any “social or political agenda” behind the decision to change how the dictionary defines marriage, according to WND.

“We hear such criticism from all parts of the political spectrum. We’re genuinely sorry when an entry in – or an omission from – one of our dictionaries is found to be offensive or upsetting, but we can’t allow such considerations to deflect us from our primary job as lexicographers,” stated Stamper.

The Springfield, Mass.-based company issued a statement Wednesday claiming that the secondary definition was added to reflect the frequency of “same-sex marriage” and “gay marriage” in publications.

“In recent years, this sense of ‘marriage’ has appeared frequently and consistently through a broad spectrum of carefully edited publications, and is often used in phrases such as ‘same-sex marriage’ and ‘gay marriage’ by proponents and opponents alike,” the statement read, according to the Associated Press. “Its inclusion was a simple matter of providing dictionary users with accurate information about all of the word’s current uses.”

Merriam-Webster spokesman Arthur Bicknell noted that the company was one of the last major dictionary publishers to revise the definition of marriage to include homosexual unions.

The controversy over gay marriage is expected to heat up once again since the Obama administration has said it will seek the full repeal of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as a union between a man and woman for all purposes of federal law and protects states from being forced to recognized same-sex marriages from other states.

Many states, in the meantime, are still wrangling over the legal issue of gay marriage. The California Supreme Court is expected to soon issue its ruling on a gay marriage ban approved by voters in November. Earlier this week, Vermont became the latest state to introduce legislation to legalize same-sex marriage.

Despite what dictionaries may call marriage, many religious leaders have said that changing the definition of marriage will not necessarily change its meaning.

Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, called redefining marriage to include same-sex couples was “moral insanity,” when The Canadian Oxford Dictionary announced in 2003 that it was changing the definition of marriage to read “the legal or religious union of two people.”

Mt. Shasta, California (PRWEB) March 18, 2009 — There’s a new kind of sexy correspondence happening between environmentally conscious singles on a popular “green dating” site, PlanetEarthSingles.com. Conversations may include his steaming hot composting methods or her choice of eco-conscious clothing made from bamboo and hemp. In the singles world, this new “sexy” has nothing to do with how much money he makes or how “hot” she looks. It’s more about the size of his carbon footprint and how she turns off the water while shaving her legs.

News ImageWhy are these hybrid-driving, organic buying, recycling fanatics flocking to online dating sites like Planet Earth Singles? Global warming, pollution and overpopulation are strongly influencing people’s priorities, including the type of person they want to meet, date, and ultimately marry. Proving the increasing popularity and growing demand for eco-friendly dating sites, Planet Earth Singles, launched on Earth Day 2006, has quickly grown to approximately 40,000 members.

Katherine Cook, a member of Planet Earth Singles says, “I’m not that comfortable meeting a man by commenting on his ‘nicely shaped eggplant’ while shopping in the produce section. Plus it’s impossible to tell if he’s single let alone recycles. Being able to go online and easily find single, available, environmentally-conscious men makes meeting someone so much easier.”

Green online dating sites like Planet Earth Singles work because they attract only environmentally-conscious singles, so the pool of members has already been “screened” simply by the nature of the site. Ranging from serious activists to casual conservationists, all members have one thing in common; they consider themselves ‘green singles’ looking to meet the same. As a member, one can use specific search criteria to narrow the field of potential candidates and zoom in on those that are truly good matches. For example: one can search for vegan, liberal, Libras. Members also find the Sexual IQ (Intimacy Quotient) and Compatibility test unique compared to other online dating sites, and quite effective.

Jill Crosby, avid environmentalist and owner and founder of PlanetEarthSingles.com says she is touched by the moving success stories from her many members that have found true love. Crosby states, ”It’s extremely rewarding to provide such a successful opportunity for “green singles” to meet each other and ‘rise’ (not fall) in love.”

One of many success stories is that of Paula, a writer, and Ken, an Eco-Real Estate Broker, who met on Planet Earth Singles four months ago. ”I know our paths would have never crossed without Planet Earth Singles,” says Ken. “We live 3 hours away from each other, so we weren’t exactly going to meet at the local juice bar.” Paula and Ken now spend most of their time at one another’s homes, cooking romantic meals together made from locally grown, organic food, lathering each other up in the shower to conserve water and traveling to tantric getaways by train or in Paula’s Prius.

Now that environmentalism is hot, eco-sexy singles are finding sites like Planet Earth Singles to be the new route to green love; not the jealous green, but the eco-friendly green. Thanks to this latest online dating trend, expect to see lots of hip, new couples this Earth Day toasting shots of wheatgrass juice to newly sprouted love and growing organically ever after. Who knew tree hugging could be so sexy?

SYDNEY (AP) — Revelers decked out in sequins, feathers, wigs and leather danced through the streets of Sydney on Saturday to the cheers of more than 300,000 people at the annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

More than 130 floats and 9,500 people participated in the procession, which began as a protest march in 1978 by homosexual and transsexual men and women and has flourished into one of the world’s largest and most flamboyant gay pride events.

“I am totally in my element,” said a transsexual who identified herself as Gummi Cat. “This is my first year being in the parade and I am absolutely loving it,” she said from a carriage pulled by a man dressed in little more than a black leather harness.

The parade kicked off with Olympic gold medal diver Matthew Mitcham, who stood atop the first float surrounded by male dancers dressed in Speedos and carrying scorecards.

Lifeguards, cheerleaders, nurses and sports teams strutted and spun to their floats’ music. Banks, schools and churches were represented, as were the Australian Federal Police, the Defense Department and state firefighters. All of the marchers, whether flamboyant in feathers and high heels or wearing their official work uniforms, were grinning ear-to-ear as they waved to the crowd.

Spectators waited for up to six hours for prime viewing spots along the 1.5-mile (2.4-kilometer) route of the 31st annual parade. Many were packed 10 rows thick along the sidewalk along the main thoroughfare Oxford Street, which was lined with metal barricades and manned by police and parade officials.

“I’m blown away. It’s been amazing,” said 75-year-old Peg Low, who waved a rainbow flag next to a barricade near the front of the parade route and attracted hugs from a few brightly dressed and heavily eyelashed marchers.

Low came from Queensland state to attend the parade in memory of her son, Stephen, who died of AIDS 15 years ago.

“I’m so happy because all our gay friends made this work, created something so wonderful,” the white-haired woman said.

American TV personality Joan Rivers, in town for her one-woman comedy show, waved from atop a truck. Another float was dedicated to slain U.S. gay rights activist Harvey Milk, the subject of a movie last year starring Sean Penn, who won an Oscar for his role.

This year’s parade theme was “Nations United,” a tribute to homosexuals around the world, particularly in countries where they cannot live openly.

In Australia last year, lawmakers passed legislation giving homosexual couples the same rights as heterosexuals, though they have not legalized same-sex marriages.

Gay Men Appear at a Greater Risk for Drug Addiction and Alcoholism According to research, it appears that gay men and women are at a greater risk of developing drug addiction or alcohol addiction than heterosexuals. Homosexuality is associated with issues such as internalized homophobia, shame, prejudice, discrimination, all fertile ground for the development of drug addiction or alcoholism. Different than most populations, all of the issues mentioned above, seem to be fostered within the family system and therefore are present from day one.

The Gay Family System and Drug Addiction For a moment imagine being parents and waiting for the day your son or daughter announces the day of their wedding, only to find out they are gay / lesbian and that day will never take place or that they will never have children the conventional way. It is rare a family is accepting of the situation and offers encouragement. The day of “coming out” is usually met with shock, anger, disappointment, embarasment or denial. In most cases, these emotions are presented in a less than productive manner creating deeper feelings of shame, resentment or depression on the part of the gay man or woman. When this occurs, what better way to cope than to turn to alcohol or drugs. This is generally the beginning of their drug addiction or alcoholism. The problem here is that it does nothing to change others beliefs or the way the gay man feels. Drug Addiction or alcoholism just turns an already complex situation into a more difficult one.

Mental Illness, Drug Addiction, Alcoholism, Dual Diagnosis and the Gay Man or Woman When we research gay drug addiction, gay drug rehab, crystal meth addiction or gay alcoholism we find an increase in gay drug addiction or gay alcoholism across the board. When taking a look at gay drug addiction and gay drug rehab admissions, we have to take a look at associated mental health issues. It appears that the majority of gay men admitted to gay drug rehab suffer from a co- occuring mental health disorder such as depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder just to name a few. As with drug addiction or alcoholism this is easy to understand when one examines the challenges a gay man or woman has to face. Growing up in a predominantly heterosexual society with strong views on sexuality, homophobia is something a gay man or gay woman must face on a daily basis. When faced with constant difficulties relating to family, relationships, self worth, sexual idenity anyone’s mental health is sure to be challenged. Whne many gay men or women are faced with feelings of depression, they turn to drugs or alcohol which in most cases ends up in a drug addiction or alcohol addiction. This is referred to as dual diagnosis; a mental health disorder in conjunction with drug addiction or alcoholism.

The way has been cleared for gay and lesbian couples to begin ,“tying the knot,” since the California Supreme Court struck down the same sex marriage ban in May 2008. It is expected that tens of thousands of same sex couples will be married this year in California. Massachusetts, the only other state to recognize same sex marriage, has a residency requirement, which California does not – meaning that not only will Californians seize this opportunity, but also countless gay couples from out of state will be coming to California to join in matrimony. A ballot issue regarding same sex marriage is to be voted on this fall; therefore, the summer will most likely be the time for many couples to wed.

Mayor Jerry Sanders has openly supported gay and lesbian marriage, and with San Diego already a top vacation destination, an expected influx of weddings in town are going to be a boom for various wedding-related businesses, pumping much needed money into the local economy.

In addition to traditional wedding venues, many couples prefer to make their special day even more memorable by creating a one-of-a-kind ceremony in unique locations, such as beaches, gardens, or perhaps even on a yacht, cruising San Diego Bay. Weddings aboard a yacht offer couples and their guests a personal, customized event with an unparalleled backdrop. For example, imagine saying “I do” while the sun sets, and the lights of the city begin to twinkle, creating that magical sparkle on both the water and the buildings of San Diego’s beautiful skyline. Yacht weddings can range from the small and intimate, to large and festive … and the captain of the vessel can even perform the ceremony.

Various wedding extras such as catering, music, photography etc., can of course also be provided.

Majority of people have already created and shaped the picture of their ideal men in the mind. Someone who is handsome, caring, generous, loving – someone who is perfect! Who would not want to meet the perfect man? Without doubt, everyone would want to be with the right man who will take care of their relationship. Internet dating allows people to hunt the perfect man that they are looking for. Even gay people would unquestionably want to look for partners and this is where gay dating personals can help. Websites that offer gay dating services are the best place to meet your dream guy. Do you know how to find him?

Signs that you have met the perfect man

If you are already hooked into internet dating and gay dating personals, you might not know that you already have the perfect man in your contacts. You might be tired of looking without knowing that he is just right in front of you. Are there necessary symptoms that will point you to the perfect man? What are the warning signs so that you can stop looking for him if he is already in your life? Here are some important gay dating personal advices that can help you find the man of your dreams.

• Not just physical attraction

When taking on a gay dating personal, the first thing that most gay people look for is the profile. If they like what they have seen, they would right away add that member into their contacts and start connecting with them through online chatting and dating. Physical attraction is one of the main criteria in looking for a prospective gay partner. However, it is not the only factor that will make your relationship perfect. You must not only look at the physique but also consider other important details of his personality and character.

• Engage in excellent conversations

At the end of the day, what would make you feel satisfied with your date is if he was able to make you feel important. If your date is a good conversationalist, most probably you would enjoy spending time with him. It does not matter if you will just spend the rest of your time just talking, you would still have a good time with him. If you would consider a lifetime relationship, it is better to choose a man who can move you with his stories because companionship is what really matters most.

• Compatibility Tests

You cannot measure your compatibility by simply reading a profile. You really have to really get to know a person better. Exchange of emails and chatting as well as gay dating personals would definitely get the job done. By engaging in important conversations, you will be able to assess if you and your prospective partner are well matched and like minded. Your online dating relationship may not be that perfect but at least you should have a common understanding in most things.

• Good Personal Values

Having good personal values is as important as having good physical appearance. Earlier, it was mentioned that physical attraction is not enough guarantee that you will be happy with the person whom you think is the perfect man. That is right! Values and principles in life should also be excellent so that you would not find yourself falling out of love because of your personal indifferences. For sure you would not want to have a partner with a negative attitude, would you?

• Clear Outlook in Life

If you are looking forward to spend the rest of your life with someone, you would definitely choose a man who has a positive way of thinking. Having a clear mind would definitely create a better path for both of you and your partner would have a straight path towards your goals in life. Someone who knows what he wants and is capable of looking at things in a brighter light would definitely be successful in almost anything.

You might have met a lot of people through gay dating personals. Some may go and there are others who will stay. The best way to assess if you already have found the perfect man is to look deep inside you. Ask yourself; what is a perfect man for me? Is there really a perfect man? What about the person who makes you happy? Is he not the perfect partner? Think about these questions because you might be faced with the perfect man and yet he is still not perfect for you.

The headline; Gay Fringe Shoots and Kills Innocent Victim; has not been displayed in newspapers yet, but the time is coming. You see there is a group within the gay and lesbian community, which is a fringe, which is quite dangerous and threatening. In fact they often go out of their way to slander, libel, usurp the law and use extortion tactics to prevent opposing views on the gay marriage and other issues.

You cannot reason with this group or talk with them, as the will simply start calling you names like; Homophobic, NAZI, ignorant or psychotic. Then after calling you these things they will say something; “I’m not going to debate with you anymore.” Interesting and this is where you can tell if you are dealing with a member of the radical fundamental gay fringe, because after that they will either threaten you or go away. When they threaten you watch out, they are not of right mind.

Fact: There is a gay fringe, generally 17-30 males, which is slowing and hampering the gay movement for fair and equal treatment under the law to get married.

Fact: This fringe group has been known and can be expected in the future to break the law, use extortion and/or threaten, out of the blue on little or no provocation or even perceived provocation.

Fact: We will see criminal acts including deaths and violence from this fringe if they are not mentored properly. Since they will not listen to anyone the only way to stop this is for the G & L community to intervene and reason with them.

Those are my points. I stand behind them as truth, they man not be PC and I am not placing blame as society usually creates its own problems, nevertheless, it is a point of contention and one which has led to more backlash than would have normally occurred from the moderate or live and let live Americans who vote and are generally the silent majority.

Too the gay and lesbian community; Good luck securing the rights to lawful marriages. I just think it may take longer due to the facts above stated. Only an observation, as I study trends. And to the over all society, we have a homosexual fringe time bomb brewing, so we better all pay attention. Consider this in 2006.
